There will be a special twist to this year's Garching Science Day. The idea is to present your plan for an ELT observing proposal based on the estimate of the telescope capability as it exists now (see below). You can either be conservative and extrapolate your current science goal to exploit the power offered by the European ELT - or - you can be innovative and think of something new and brilliant (that you are proud to share with your colleagues!)

The talks will follow the usual format with a strict 5min limit. Electronic presentations (ppt or pdf) are mandatory and must be submitted by email to Marco Lombardi by 17:00 on Thursday October 12: please use your ESO username as a filename, eg. rfosbury.ppt. The following template can be used as a guide:

The talks will be collected together and made available to the project.

Please make sure that you have sent your title to Christina Stoffer (cstoffer@eso.org) - requested by Friday 6 Oct.

Please see the ESO E-ELT webpages for information about the project, the science case and the estimated capabilities. There is an Exposure Time Calculator. We do not want to restrict your proposals by insisting that you use one of the currently envisaged instruments - even though they may cover pretty much all of parameter space. You should, however, be aware of the likely telescope size and overall system performance.

There will be a liquid prize offered to the top 5 proposers. The proposals will be judged by a mock-ELT OPC. The following have kindly agreed to serve. The results will be announced early the following week.

In addition to providing useful input to the project, this exercise will give us a chance to explore the effect that a single ELT will have on the way in which our community will do astronomy during the next few decades.
